The Mouse & The Kiss

by Marc Gunn, October 15, 2004

I've been in a romantic poetry writing mood of recent. I wrote this late after performing at the Texas Renaissance Festival.

She glided beneath the stars
Silent and serene
Like a ghost across the
Field of wheat.
It glowed a dark yellow,
Her skin a pale white.
She smiled as an owl
Flew from the brush
A mouse squeeked beneath
Her feet as she strode.

A man stood next to a rock
Of bold granite.
It jutted out among
The harvest.
His eyes, firm, looked out
Through the night sky.
He heard the flutter
Of a bird.
Soon a mouse squeeked beneath
His feet as he waited.

An owl hooted as it flew
Beneath a magnificent golden moon.
She pushed through the thrush
And saw her man.
He looked up, smiled, and
He embraced her.
Two long lost lovers finding
Their way home to each other's hearts.
The mouse climbed the granite rock
As they kissed.

Continue The Quest

by Marc Gunn, October 15, 2004

I've been dreaming of elves of recent. They inspired this poem of elves and forests among the hills.

I saw a nymph on a hillside
Standing in a field of red poppy.
Her fair skin glowed bright in the sunlight.
She turned, and I caught her eye.

She gazed for a moment.
It felt like a lifetime.
I thirsted for those soft, ruby lips
And the skilken touch of her dark brown hair.
I saw our children climbing a great oak.
I could feel my heart sink to my feet.
It was over.
I was caught in her spell.

No sooner was I ensnared,
Than she disappeared into the woods.
I ran after her.
Soft light flowed through the trees.
A yellow dog stood beside the oak in my precognition,
But no nymph was there.
The young dog gaszed at me as if to say,
"Why do you chase a dream?"

I had no answer to give.

Perhaps it's an emotional weakness of mine
To forever chase the Grail,
To never find my desires.
You always want what you can't have.

Or perhaps the lifetime we lived together
Awakened a desire to see if that dream
Could become a reality.

I lay back down to sleep,
That my dreams could continue the Quest.

Take the Punches

by Marc Gunn, August 2003

Once again, I find myself fighting with my co-dependent behavior to avoid losing the characteristics that make me, me.

It's so easy to submit myself to submission.
It's so easy to surrender to a smile.
It's so easy to lose myself completely
And to listen to the lies that create my melodramatic trials.

I just want to be loved and
to feel loved in return,
But I don't know if I can submit my own will
to the desires I yearn.

I don't know if I can surrender and
lose my ability to think
I don't know if I can let myself love because
I don't want to lose my independence and inner peace.

I try to block out the lies,
Yet the judge and jury won't give in
They only want to condemn me to be
a slave to my own passions.

The test, the trials, the tribulations we must face
Are only a pale reflection
of the courage of our race.

But to stand firm and believe
and
Never
to give control
Will protect me from my meek gender
And the ability to take the punches
and roll.
