Pub Songs Podcast #19 - Live Evening with Marc Gunn
Star of the County Down words and music traditional
Near Banbridge Town, in the County Down One morning last July, Down a boreen green came a sweet colleen, And she smiled as she passed me by; Oh, she looked so neat from her two bare feet To the sheen of her nut-brown hair, Such a coaxing elf, sure I shook myself For to see I was really there
From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay, And from Galway to Dublin town, No maid I've seen like the sweet colleen That I met in the County Down.
As she onward sped sure I scratched my head And I looked with a feeling rare, Then I said, says I, to a passer-by, "Who's the maid with the nut-brown hair?" Oh, he smiled at me, and with pride says he, "That's the gem of Ireland's crown, She's young Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann, She's the Star of the County Down."
I've traveled a bit, but never was hit Since my roving career began; But fair and square I surrendered there To the charms of young Rose McCann. I'd a heart to let and no tenant yet Did I meet in shawl or gown, But in she went and I asked no rent From the Star of the County Down.
At the harvest fair she'll be surely there And I'll dress in my Sunday clothes With my shoes shone bright and my hat cocked right For a smile from my nut-brown rose. No pipe I'll smoke, no horse I'll yoke Though with rust my plow turns brown, Till a smiling bride by my own fireside Sits the Star of the County Down.
Alla Fiera Del'Este words and music traditional
Loch Tay words and music traditional
When I've done the work of day, And I row my boat away Doon the waters of Loch Tay, As the evening light is fading And I look upon Ben Lawers, Where the after glory glows, And I think on two bright eyes, And the melting mouth below.
She's my beauteous nighean ruadh, She's my joy and sorrow too. And although she is untrue Well I cannot live without her. For my heart's a boat in tow, And I'd give the world to know Why she means to let me go As I sing horee, horo.
Nighean ruadh your lovely hair, Has more glamour I declare Than all the tresses rare, 'Tween Killin and Aberfeldy. Be they lint white, brown or gold, Be they black than the sloe, They are worth no more to me, Than the melting flake of snow.
Her eyes are like the gleam, O' the sunlight on the stream, And the song the fairies sing, Seems like songs she sings at milking But my heart is full of woe, For last night she bade me go And the tears begin to flow, As I sing horee, horo.
I Saved The Planet Earth (Dr. Who) words and music Marc Gunn
I heard a loud sound outside my drugstore So I stuck out my head A man stepped out of a blue telephone box And this is what he said,
"Last night, with the help of that mailbox A hypernova gave birth Last night with the help of that mailbox I saved the planet earth."
He told me how an alien wrote a short letter As an introduction to the human race But when he licked the envelope, the glue touched his tongue And a hypernova collapsed in its place.
This hypernova sent waves of destruction in its path A ladybug was the first to see, it's true She realized it could not pass through the steal mailbox So she telephoned her friend, Dr. Who
Well Dr. Who appeared outside the drugstore The letter he dropped in the mailbox Five minutes later he opened up the box and earth was saved Then Dr. Who was arrested by the cops. He cried...
